G. E. Vahanvati (65): The former Attorney-General of India G. E. Vahanvati died in Mumbai on September 2, 2014 following a heart attack. He was 65. Mr. Vahanvati was appointed as the 13th Attorney-General from Iune -2009 for a three year term. Prior to his appointment as the top law officer, he al ` had served as the Solicitor-General of India between June 20, 2004 and Iune 7, 2009. He was earlier the Advocate General of Maharashtra. In 2012 his term as Attorney General was extended By two years. He resigned on may 27, this year after the BJP-led Government headed by Narendra Modi took over power at the centre.
Firoza Begum (1930-2014) (85):
Bangladesh’s Nazrul Sangeet legend Firoza Begum died in Dhaka on September 9, 2014. She was 85.Firoza Begum had mesmerized Bengalis with her voice for seven decades. She had been ailing for a long time. Born in 1930, Firoza Begum was educated in Calcutta in undivided India and was closely linked with rebel poet. In the illustrious career Firoza sang ’Rabindra Sangeet ’Adhunik Bangla’ songs, ghazal, qawwali and bhajan for her audience. She performed around 300 solo concerts. In 1949, Firoza and ghazal exponent Talat Mahmud were the voices that inaugurated the Dhaka Radio.Firoza has been the winner of the Independence Day Award, among numerous other honours.
A. P. Venkateswaran (85):
Former Foreign Secretary A. P. Venkateswaran passed away at Bangalore on September 2, 2014. He was 85. Mr. Venkateswaran was Chairman of the Asia Centre, which is engaged in organising interaction and discussions on issues pertaining to Asian countries.
He had made headlines when he resigned from his post in’1987, after he was snubbed by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Mr. Venkateswaran had aid that his resignation had been a spontaneous action as he had always Venkateswaran believed that life without honour was not worth living at all.
Norman Gordon: Oldest Cricket Player Dies (103):
South African fast bowler Norman Gordon, the oldest surviving Test Cricketer aged 103, passed away after a year long illness due to renal complications. Gordon passed away in his home in Hillbrow, close to the Johan-nesburg City Centre, where he has lived for over 60 years. Gordon played five Tests against England back in 1939 taking 20 wickets. All those Tests were before the World War. His nickname was ‘Mobil’ as he used to apply hair gel to set his flowing mane while bowling.He was best known for being one of the 22 players, who took part in the epic ‘Timeless Test’ between England and South Africa that was held between March 3-14, 1939 in Durban.
Joan Rivers (1933-2014) (81):
Joan Rivers, the caustic stand-up comic and television host who blazed a trail at a time when comedy was all but off limits to women, died in New York on September 5,
2014. She was 81.
Richard Kiel (74)
Veteran actor Richard Kiel, best known for playing the fearsome villain ‘laws’ in the James Bond film The Spy who Loved Me and Moonraker, died in the second week of September 2014 in California (US). He was 74.
Ian Paisley (88)
Former Northern Irish First Minister Ian Paisley, the fire brand protest leader, died on September 12, 2014 at the age of 88.
Yoshiko ‘Shirley’ Yamaguchi (94):
Japanese actress and Singer Yoshiko ‘Shirley’ Yamaguchi died in Tokyo on September 7, 2014. She was 94.
Kireet Joshi (83):
Eminent educationist and former educational adviser to die union government Kireet Joshi passed away in Puducherry on September 14, 2014 after battling cancer. He was 83.
